Research Programs
Wildlife Connection is also a civilian Mexican association, without any financial purpose. The legal name is Conexión con la Vida Silvestre A.C. which is dedicated to the research and to spread out the latest ways to preserve and protect cetaceans. Through research information is generated to structure projects for environmental education which fosters awareness of preservation and communication among people who share the same aims.
The Conexión con la Vida Silvestre A.C. was created in 1998 by a group of specialists and researchers with a wide proven experience in the field of cetaceans’ research and fauna in general as well as in environmental education.
We know that the first step to ensure an efficient protection, preservation and to advantage of the species and their habitat, it is necessary to broad the knowledge of those biological resources. Such knowledge should be based on solid scientific principles heading to protection and preservation along with environmental education programs, which share useful elements based on scientific evidence. We are currently working on several research projects taking place at Banderas’ Bay with different kinds of cetaceans such as Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaengliae) and Orcas. (Orcinus orca)
Research projects have the aim of knowing the current conditions of the different species creating information about the size of populations, its abundance, distribution, ethology, photo identification, movements and residence, as a part of an initial attempt to understand their ecology and social structure, as well as the impact human activity has over these populations. Besides it is important to know the conditions of the population of sea mammals and changes in them which give us information on the current state of the bay.
